Research abstract

THE GENERAL TOPIC OF THIS PROJECT IS NOVEL APPROACHES TO THEISOLATION AND PURIFICATION OF ANTICANCER AGENTS FROM NATURALSOURCES. THE NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED IS BASEDON THE MULTILAYER COIL SEPARATOR-EXTRACTOR OF THE PLANET CENTRIFUGE TYPE. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TOCOMMERCIALLY PRODUCE AN EFFICIENT COUNTERCURRENT CHROMATO- GRAPH THAT CAN BE MARKETED SUCCESSFULLY IN COMPETITION WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART JAPANESE IMPORTS IN THE FIELD OF COUNTER- CURRENT CHROMATOGRAPHY. EXTENSIVE TESTING WITH VARIOUS TYPES OF BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES WILL BE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE OPTIMUM PARAMETERS, AND ENGINEERING CHANGES OF THE PROTOTYPEWOULD BE STUDIED-IN PARTICULAR, THREE-DIMENSIONAL MIXING OF THE TWO SOLVENT PHASES BY CHANGING CERTAIN ANGLES IN THE INSTRUMENT. THE DATA COLLECTED DURING PHASE I WILL ALLOW THE MARKETING OF A COUNTERCURRENT CHROMATOGRAPH FOR A BROAD CROSS-SECTION OF THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY. A PHASE II EFFORT MAY BE DIRECTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EFFICIENT PREPARATIVE SCALE INSTRUMENT GEARED TO INDUSTRIAL UTILIZATION, SUCH AS SEPARATION OF ANTIBIOTICS FROM FERMENTATION BROTHS AND ISOLATION OF ANTITUMOR SUBSTANCES FROM MARINE ORGANISMS.
