Research abstract

SatCon Technology Corporation proposes to design, and analyze a 100 HP, 500 RPM magnetically suspended, rim-driven propulsor drive for use in a Naval underwater system. The contactless nature of magnetic bearings will improve efficiency, increase bearing life, reduce maintenance, and eliminate any bearing lubrication requirements. The proposed rim mounted, high pole count, high frequency permanent magnet brushless motor will result in a quite, efficient, and compact system. SatCon is currently manufacturing a similar Integrated Suspension and Motor System for semiconductor wafer fabrication equipment. The proposed propulsor system will be an extension of this demonstrated technology, and hence SatCon does not foresee major technology shortfalls. The development of the propulsor will involve modifying the existing product to accommodate the high thrust loads and high torque required of the propulsion application. During the phase I program SatCon will design a magnetically suspended propulsor drive for a Navy application of approximately 100 hp at 500 rpm. This will involve analytical and finite element modeling to arrive at a preliminary design. In a optional extension to the phase I program SatCon proposes to demonstrate the critical active thrust bearing component of the design by modifying and testing an existing Integrated Motor and Suspension System. In Phase II SatCon Technology Corporation will complete detail design, fabricate, and test a prototype magnetically suspended, rim-driven propulsor system.
