Research abstract

Not Available This SBIR proposes the design of an expendable directional noise measurement sensor for in-situ (using tactical sonobuoys or dipping sonar) or post analysis (using an Environmental Measurement Buoy (EMB)) of environmental acoustic parameters which impact the performance capabilities of sonar systems. These data would be inputs to acoustic performance models such as Tactical Design Aids (TDAs). Variants of this sensor could provide affordable environmental data acquisition for commercial and other Department of Defense applications. The technical objective is to formulate a design concept and demonstrate feasibility of an A -size air-deployed expendable directional noise and reverberation sensor. This sensor will obtain real time, environmental data in shallow water to optimize the deployment and performance of acoustic sensors and systems. The sensor will be used to collect data for historical data bases and predeployment forecasting of future missions. The Navmar sensor will be capable of measuring the following parameters; directional ambient noise and reverberation, bottom depth and transmission loss for both monostatic and bistatic measurements in water depths to 1000 feet. From the above parameters, bottom loss and bottom backscatter can be calculated through the use of models. Sensor characteristics to be considered are dynamic range, source level, bandwidth and in-buoy processing.
