This project will develop software to be used in simulating the full physics of fluid-solid interactions on massively parallel computers. Typical applications of this software include: flow-induced vibrations, thermo-mechanical coupling, cargo sloshing loads, and thermal management. These applications are important ingredients in the design and improvement of power generation and transportation systems. Algorithms will be developed which take advantage of high-performance parallel computing using a message passing paradigm. The algorithms will be implemented for incompressible fluid-solid interaction problems, exploiting the novel parallel/multiphysics architecture of the Spectrum¿ Solver, a finite-element analysis tool. The main vehicle for parallelism in this context is the spatial subdivision of the problem geometry into subdomains which are distributed among parallel processors for concurrent computation.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Potential applications of this product are in the design of automobiles, trucks, aircraft and trains, where optimization of mechanical components and thermal management can lead to improved efficiency in energy use. Other applications are in the design of components in alterative energy sources such as nuclear energy and wind energy.
