Research abstract
The BLISS Phase IIb project aims to enhance the safety, efficiency, and scalability of battery logistics across multiple industries, focusing on the automotive sector through partnerships with GM, Honda, and Toyota. Building on the successes of Phases I and II under the USDOT PHMSA grants, Phase IIb will further develop ESSPI’s DNOC (Detection, Notification, Operations, and Communications) platform, integrating real-time monitoring, automated alerts, and proactive risk mitigation features into battery storage and transport solutions. This phase will expand the application of BLISS technology through practical, large-scale pilots, demonstrating its adaptability to various logistics environments and validating its ability to detect and prevent battery-related hazards in real-world conditions. Key product components, such as the DNOC-enabled Smart Fire Blanket, will be field-tested to assess functionality, responsiveness, and ease of integration within existing logistics networks.
Phase IIb will also advance ESSPI's commercialization strategy, paving the way for widespread adoption of BLISS products across sectors that rely on high-energy batteries, including healthcare and aerospace. To support this, ESSPI has secured a 50% matching grant from the State of Michigan, potential investments from OEM partners, and a Scale Fund Grant from Michigan Central. With a focus on regulatory compliance and industry standards, Phase IIb will demonstrate that BLISS offers a viable, intelligent safety solution for battery logistics, ultimately creating a scalable model that can be deployed across intermodal logistics networks. By the project’s end, BLISS is expected to set new benchmarks in battery safety, establishing ESSPI as a leader in intelligent, connected safety technology.
