Research abstract
In May of 2000, Micro Analysis and Design, Inc. and KleinAssociates, Inc., were awarded a Phase I SBIR to research anddevelop computational models of decision making in stressful anduncertain conditions (Topic # N00-074, Modeling and Simulation ofDecision-making Under Uncertainty). This research was motivatedby the need for improved behavioral realisms in computergenerated forces (CGFs) with an eye toward reducing and, perhaps, even eliminating the need for human-in-the-loop simulations.Rather than continue in the tradition of rational choice theoriesand rule-based expert systems, we took a novel approach to thisresearch and began work on a model of Recognition Primed Decisionmaking (RPD). During the basic Phase II work, we propose to:extend the model of decision making under uncertainty wedeveloped during our Phase I work by investigating andincorporating a more complete model of stress; and evaluate theuser interfaces prototyped during Phase I; construct themiddleware necessary to embed our decision models in HLA-compliant simulations; identify three decisions within a CGFenvironment to be effected by our model and construct models forthese decision. Should the option tasks be awarded, we willrefine the model and middleware in light of their performance ina simple CGF scenario and undertake a formal process of VV&A.
