Research abstract

Not Available We propose, in this Phase I program, to study the feasibility of a high-power terahertz source using narrow-line width, high-power, visible diode lasers in combination with an ultrafast photodetector/deipole antenna array. This method should produce milliwatts of tunable terahertz radiation with a long-term frequency stability of less than 100 MHz. The Phase I program will focus on understanding two primary aspects: (1) Develop and refine techniques for frequency narrowing commercially-available, broadband laser diodes with output powers of several watts. (2) Design and model GaAs photodetector arrays with the requisite terahertz response and sensitivity. The development of these two critical components as well as the creation of the associated optical system will provide sufficient information to evaluate the feasibility of a complete high-power terahertz wave generator.
