Research abstract

HIGH ENERGY DENSITY CAPACITORS ARE NEEDED TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF LASER SYSTEMS. BECAUSE CAPACITOR DESIGN IS A MATURE TECHNOLOGY, IMPROVEMENTS IN PERFORMANCE OF THE SIZE NEEDED FOR TOMORROWS LASERS WILL LIKELY COME FROM IMPROVEMENTS IN CERAMIC FORMULATION AND MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY. PHASE I ADDRESSES THESE TWO ISSUES BY EXPERIMENTALLY EXPLORING THE FEASIBILITY OF CONTINUOUSLY COATING METAL FOIL WITH AMORPHOUS DIELECTRIC. THE DIELECTRIC HAS THE REQUIRED COMBINATION OF RELATIVELY HIGH DIELECTRIC CONSTANT, VERY LOW LOSS, AND VERY HIGH BREAKDOWN STRENGTH.
