Research abstract

The proposed solution to solicitation N94-177 is a scaled down version of an existing proven 2 X 2 optical switch. The existing design meets or exceeds the required performance characteristics as follows: CHARACTERISTIC EXISTING PROPOSED Switching Time 30-50 ms 90 ms Insertion loss 1.5 db 2 dB Total size 3 cc 1 cc Operating voltage 3-5 V 3 Vdc Fail safe mode Yes Yes Peak drain 1 ma 50 ma Operating Temp range -10 to +40 -2 to +35 Storage temp range -40 to +100 -40 to +55 The Phase I effort will consist of a demonstration of the feasiblity of the required switch by demonstrating the existing switch with attached fibers. It wil also include the generation of a detailed design plan for the effort required to produce a demonstration model of the scaled down version in Phase II. No technical difficulties are envisioned at this time in being able to meet all the required performance parameters for Phase II. All the technology exists and is available at the Norwalk, CT facility where the work will be performed.
