Research abstract
A central challenge in Boost-Phase Intercept of a hostile ballistic missile is the targeting of the missile body in the brilliant plume. We have developed an IR sensor system that takes advantage of special characteristics of plume radiation to provide twobands that have very different relative sensitivity to the plume and body. We combine these bands with an algorithm that exploits this relationship to make the hard body of the missile stand out in the image of the high altitude plume. In Phase I weconducted tradeoffs to determine a practical implementation of this dual-band sensor within current technology limits. We have used Project Hercules design data for kinetic kill systems, and derived required sensor parameters. Output of Phase I is apreliminary design for a kinetic kill vehicle sensor, with performance predictions, and a review of technology and development issues in the detailed design, development and production of the sensor system. With Northrop Grumman as a teammate, in Phase IIwe will produce a demonstration sensor and conduct risk reduction demonstrations in our laboratory and at the AFRL/MN KHILS Facility.
