Research abstract

We propose a wireless (HF band) network integrated with existing wireline network system which could be used as an extension of the wireline network. The system should handle both voice and data, should conform to the existing and future wireline protocols, could be easily reconfigured and should provide robust and secure means of communication in battlefield and in areas where wirelines do not exist. Conventional HF channel cannot support high data rate over sustained period of time. We propose to use short packets over many parallel paths and use adaptive control in real time. A major innovation is proposed for the efficient use of the HF channel using a novel "intelligent node controller." This controller utilizes a physical model of the ionosphere and predicts the spatial and temporal variations of the ionospheric channel. The inverse channel transfer function derived from the model is used in an improved RAKE architecture. Utilization of multipath and multi-routing capabilities allow highly increased throughput and parallel control over these channels and are provided through the node controller. These features are integrated with the overall networking scheme. During Phase I we shall design the intelligent node controller which will significantly improve the throughput of the H.F. channel. Complete system will be built and demonstrated during Phase II. Anticipated Benefits: HF network could be a valuable extension of the Global-Grid concept. This would provide a cost-effective alternative in sparsely populated areas and in various sectors of DoD. Commercial application exists in maritime, aviation, highway, railways and particularly during emergencies.
