Research abstract

This proposal addresses the development, fabrication and testing of an ultrabroadband 100-2000MHz direction finding array system for mounting on tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's) equipped with a modal (sum-difference) type DF system. In Phase I,the feasibility of several innovative antenna elements was demonstrated by analysis in a four element array configuration. A means for improving the performance of compact, reduced height arrays at low frequencies was conceived where the DF systemperformance is typically degraded by high Mode 1 mismatch losses. In Phase II, we propose to build on these Phase I results by fabricating several scale model arrays which will be tested in our laboratory and in I2WD's anechoic facility on controlledground planes and on a scale model of the Shadow 200 UAV platform. Advanced mechanical designs will be developed for each approach and the results of this activity will be combined with the test results and a final recommended array design will beselected. A
