Research abstract

Maxdem has developed a novel family of exceptionally high modulus, high strength, thermoplastic resins, designated Poly-X(th), based on processable rifid-rod polymer technology. Poly-X(tm) derivatives possess a unique array of properties among organic polymes and, yet, are projected to be competitively priced at commercial production levels. Surprisingly for rigid-rod polymers which tend to be totally immiscible with flexible polymers, Poly-X(tm) has been found to extremely compatible with polycarbonate over the entire composition range. Blends or laminates combining the desirable properties of rigid-rod SRP's and polycarbonate are expected to make excellent ballistic-protective materials. During the proposed Phase I work, test samples of two Poly-X(tm) derivatives and several modifications thereof will be prepared for intial ballistic polycarbonate and incorporation of glass-fiber mats and short-glass fiber reinforcements. A successful effort will demonstrate novel Poly-x(tm) product forms with promising ballistic properties. Phase II efforts will build on this work and include more detailed testing of larger structural sections and optimization of the composition and construction of a practical ballistic protective material for military uses. Anticipated Benefits/Potential - A novel class of strong, impact-resistant thermoplastics which will serve as low-cost, ultralightweight armor materials. Applications include armor for highly maneuverable military vehicles and aircraft for opaque materials and protective windows, covers, helmets, goggles, etc. for transparent materials.
