Research abstract
This program will demonstrate key enabling technologies for Terabit/second optical fiber networks capable of meeting critical DoD needs. Optical network technology offers characteristics that satisfy many DoD requirements. These characteristics include improved data handling through multiwavelength transmission in single optical fibers; enhanced network security; greater inter-network operability; and reduction in hardware replacement costs through use of cost effective modular system components. The goal of this program is to develop a compact front-end source plus encoder that allow the exploitation of the 30 THZ bandwidth of long-haul optical fibers. Our Phase I program focuses on the demonstration of acousto-optic pulse shaping techniques for high-speed encoding. In the Phase II we will combine our compact ultrafast fiber lasers (developed in collaboration with MIT and AT&T) with the acousto-optics techniques demonstrated during the initial Phase. We will study cost effective ways to produce compact and reliable Tbits per second sources that are compatible with existing long-haul fiber networks. Our program goals will be reached in collaboration with Professor Warren Warren (Princeton University). A brief listing of applications includes: ultrabroadband communication and coherent control of matter.
