Research abstract

Cardinal Scientific Inc., has designed, fabricated and tested a number of lightweight structural support systems that are used in different product applications. Using our modeling capability, we performed a brief computer analysis of the initial loading conditions for this long span roof framing system and found that a truss design can meet the loading requirements. Truss structures use combinations of nearly pure compressive and tension members and provide large load carrying ability for minimal material. Considering this design approach, our technical objectives include: (1) Long span roof, based on truss design; (2) Light weight compression members based on element geometry and/or reinforced materials; (3) Pension members consisting of light-weight, high-strength cables; (4) Modular design, with the largest subcomponent no larger than 20 feet long, for ISO container compatibility; (5) Simple assembly procedures for assembly in the field by military personnel; (6) Incorporation of roof decking integral with the long span design. In order to develop an optimal design, we have proposed to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques to evaluate the use of different materials and different truss geometry. This SBIR presented two completely different design approaches to provide examples of trusses that can support, and exceed, service loads of 500 lbs/ft2. These example concepts also integrate roof decking within the design and show weight savings of over 136,000 lbs per span compared to conventional construction techniques and materials. Our effort under this SBIR will be to develop structural models and use computer FEA to optimize component elements within a truss.
