Research abstract

NASA IS STRONGLY COMMITTED TO THE AUTOMATION OF AERONAUTICALFLIGHT. AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS AUTOMATION IS FAULT DIAGNOSIS AND SELF-REPAIRING CONTROL WHICH WILL CLEARLY REQUIRE REAL-TIME EXPERT SYSTEMS. ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM IN THE MONITORING OF FLIGHT TESTS AS WELL AS NORMAL AIRCRAFTOPERATION, TOGETHER WITH TOOL DEVELOPMENTS FOR EFFICIENTLY IMPLEMENTING SUCH GOAL DIRECTED LOGIC AND CONTROL WILL CLEARLY CONTRIBUTE TO OTHER PROGRAMS SUCH AS NASA'S AUTOMATED WINGMAN, AND DARPA'S ALV AND PILOT'S ASSOCIATE PROGRAMS. THE EFFORT WILL CLARIFY THE FAULT DIAGNOSTIC AND RECONFIGURATION AREAS AND SPECIFY RUN-TIME EXPERT SYSTEM INTERFACES WITH ISI'S EXISTING REAL-TIME CONTROL CAPABILITIES.
