Research abstract
79180S The International Technology Recommendation Panel (ITRP) recommended the use of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities in the linacs of the International Linear Accelerator (ILC). It is estimated that about 20,000 cavities are necessary to achieve the target beam energies. This project will develop a comprehensive tuning system for SRF cavities based on magnetostrictive actuators to reduce capital and operating costs significantly. A proven magnetostrictive-actuator-based tuning technology will be used in order to merge the slow and fast tuner into one device. The result will be a simplified system that is more reliable, better performing, and considerably less expensive than existing systems. In Phase I, the concept for the comprehensive tuning system will be fully developed, leading to a completed design. A prototype tuning system will be fabricated and tested and a design for manufacturing will also be performed to reduce the costs. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to the benefits to the SRF community, the technology also should find application in vibration control/vibration isolation, and in cryogenic actuation.
