Research abstract
The objective of this project is to explore the potential for generator set size and weight reduction through the use of integrated power components. Components of the generator system will include a lightweight, high frequency alternator (HFA) coupled with power frequency conversion (PFC) components to produce high-quality, MIL-STD, 60 hertz power. The generator system will include controls that maintains the output power quality with changing engine speed and with steady-state and transient load changes. Recent developments in power semiconductor devices and circuits indicate a high probability that improvement in generator sets is achievable. At any given power level devices are now available that allow operation at higher frequency with attendant savings in size, weight and cost. It is easier to integrate these new devices into circuits because of their design and because interfacing integrated circuits are becoming available. This Phase I project is a tradeoff analysis to identify: (1) the optimum improved system design, (2) The optimum power semiconductor technology for power control and for interfacing integrated circuits, and (3) The optimum power semi-conductor topology. The analysis will cover the power ranges of 5-30 kw, 30-100 kw, and 100-1,000 kw.
