Research abstract

IN THIS PROJECT, A NOVEL HE-3 NEUTRON DETECTOR WILL BE CONSTRUCTED. THE TECHNIQUE WILL USE HIGH PRESSURE HE-3 AND A SCINTILLATION MEDIUM. NEUTRONS INTERACTING WITH HE-3 WILL PRODUCE ENERGETIC PROTONS AND TRITONS. THE DEVICE WILL BE CONSTRUCTED SO AS TO MAXIMIZE THE DEPOSITION OF ENERGY BY THE CHARGED PARTICLES IN THE SCINTILLATION MEDIUM. THE RESULTING LIGHT WILL BE COLLECTED BY CONVENTIONAL PHOTOMULTIPLIER TUBES TO GENERATE A FAST OUTPUT PULSE WHOSE AMPLITUDE IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE ENERGY LOSS OF THE REACTION PRODUCTS.
