Research abstract

CSA Engineering, Inc., and its team partner, Pratt and Whitney, propose to develop and validate a design methodology for using Multi-Particle Impact Damping (MPID) in high temperature applications. Research work has indicated that multi-particle impact dampimg (also referred to as "particle damping") could be a viable option for extreme temperature applications. However, to date, the lack of a robust design methodology that includes both MPID material characterization testing and an analytical method based on test has limited MPID usage to "trial-and-error" applications. The innovtion of this proposal is a focused research effort that will develop a complete design methodology for MPID. This effort will develop a MPID material characterization test procedure to enhance the understanding of the damping mechanisms and obtain MPID damping properties. Further, an analytical method will be developed that uses the material characterization data todesign damping into structural systrms using MPID. This complete design methodology will be validated in "proof-of-methodology" testing on a structural component in the Phase I program. The validated MPID design for a Pratt & Whitney hot engine component to be tested in Phase II.
