Research abstract

THE INTENT OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO INVESTIGATE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION AND THE USE OF ADVANCED DISPLAYFORMATS AND CONTROLS FOR IMPROVING GROUND-AIR (AND POTENTIALLY AIR-GROUND) COMMUNICATIONS AND THE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS OF THE CREW RELATIVE TO CRITICAL AIRBORNE TRAFFIC,AS WELL AS "ADMINISTRATIVE" INFORMATION VITAL TO THE SMOOTH OPERATION OF COMMERCIAL AIR CARRIERS. BY UTILIZING OUR EXPERIENCE WITH PERFORMING REQUIREMENTS ANALYSES AND DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED COCKPITS (F-22, B-2), CREW-AIDING SYSTEMS (PILOT'S ASSOCIATE - PA), WORKLOAD TESTING OF COCKPITS (C-17, B-2, F-22) AND ACTUAL EXPERIENCE IN COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT FLIGHT DECK OPERATIONS (AIRBUS A300),THE SYMVIONICS/ISX TEAM WILL DEVELOP THE NECESSARY INFORMATIONAL AND CONTROL REQUIREMENTS BASED UPON THE INTERDEPENDENCES AMONG THE TASKS FOR AREAS SUCH AS COMMUNICATION, NAVIGATION, FUEL AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND EMERGENCIES. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY ENABLE THE CREW OF COMMERCIAL AIRLINERS TO EXPLOIT DATA LINKED INFORMATION. OUR OBJECTIVES WILL BE MET BY PERFORMING THESE TYPES OF ANALYSES: MISSION ANALYSES, BLOCK DIAGRAM DEVELOPMENT, ACTION/INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS, FUNCTIONAL ALLOCATION ANALYSIS AND TASK/WORKLOAD ANALYSIS. FURTHER WE WILL PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COCKPIT DISPLAY FORMATS & CONTROLS DEVELOPMENT.
