Research abstract

This proposal describes the development of a conformal body worn antenna subsystem to be integrated into a tactical vest that is capable of operating in both an omnidirectional threat detection mode and a direction finding mode. In Phase I, theperformance goals for the antenna subsystem will be established, and antenna configurations capable of meeting these objectives will be defined and analyzed both in free space and in the presence of the human body. Performance estimates includingradiation pattern, gain, bandwidth and VSWR will be made using computational methods such as Finite Difference Time Domain. It is proposed to investigate designs based on the combination of impedance loading and meanderline loaded antennas (MLA) both ofwhich have been patented. This approach will result in a low profile antenna that will have the desired 10:1 bandwidth for the initial development. Techniques for switching and combining the components of the MLA will also be examined and a preliminaryprototype will be demonstrated at the end of Phase I. State-of-the art materials will be used to implement the antenna elements so that they are lightweight, extremely rugged and launderable. Body conformal VHF/UHF antenna systems that can be incorporated into military clothing will enhance mission effectiveness since they eliminate the need to stop and setup a separate antenna. Commercial benefits include antennas for multifunction wearableapplications and electronic apparel.
