Research abstract

The primary objective of this SBIR is to investigate a novel OMIR (OMnidirectional InfraRed) imaging sensor concept, which provides a low-cost solution to obtain video rate 360-degree IR images for situation awareness for the space/aerial and groundvehicles. In our Phase I effort, we have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of the OMIR concept. Specifically, our accomplishments include: (a) We have design, built and tested an OMIR prototype that employs a low-cost IR sensor and our customdesigned OMNI-Mirror. The prototype hardware allows us for acquiring 360-degree IR images at a video rate (30 frames per second). (b) We have developed sophisticated algorithms and software to convert the omnidirectional images into panoramic andperspective images. The software also offers the motion detection, objective detection, and alarm/recording capabilities that are critical for near-vehicle situation awareness applications (c) After we have demonstrated the feasibility of the basic OMIRmodel, we went further to investigate a new scheme to increase the resolution of IR sensor, based on a novel concept of
