Research abstract

Under Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) funding, Ciencia, Inc. has discovered a method to substantially improve a known spectral (and polarization) discrimination element, the acousto-optic tunable filter (AOFT). Ciencia's technology permits independent control of bandpass wavelength, bandwidth and angular aperture, a capability not available with current generation AOTFs. The goal of the proposed program is to transition this defense-related technology into commercially viable spectral imaging instruments for remote detection or monitoring of environmental conditions on land or sea. The resulting devices will permit, for the first time, the development of an electronically tunable multispectral imager capable of maintaining constant spectral resolution across its turning range, while providing polarization information. This will result in greatly enhanced detection and quantification of environmentally significant processes and materials. Anticipated Benefits: This dual use of defense technology has enormous commercial potential which makes the proposed innovation an excellent candidate for transitioning into private-sector funded products. Potential markets include environmental surveillance and remediation, agricultural crop management, forestry, nondestructive testing, manufacturing process control, and medical imaging.
