Research abstract
Not Available The effective use of active sonar systems in littoral environments relies on the accurate knowledge of the acoustic environment. Current Navy standard databases for ocean bottom properties provide a valuable tool for planning but do not currently provide the spatial resolution needed. Inversion of ownship and/or bistatic/multistatic transmissions for ocean bottom properties can provide much more accurate information about the acoustic environment. This information can then be used in optimizing the use of the active sonar system, in essence, tuning the sonar for the environment. Recent advances in inversion techniques, specifically Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA), have made these techniques tactically viable tools by significantly increasing their speed. PSI proposes to implement the ASA algorithm with current transmission loss and bottom reverberation models to develop a set of tactical tools. Each of these inversions will characterize the ocean bottom in terms of Navy standard parameters. The use of Navy standard parameters allows the immediate use of these values in performance prediction models and their use in a network-centric environment among different combatants.
