Research abstract

Measurement and real-time telemetry of tsunami wave runup height data provides an important component of the overall threat estimate at tsunami warning centers. However, there are no commercially available devices which could furnish this information. Thus, the proposed is an R&D program aimed at the development of an inexpensive, "intelligent", accurate water level data transmitter based on the use of hydrostatic pressure sensing element(s). The system will be equipped with an independent power source and a two way radio or cellular telephone telemetry channel. Special attention will be paid to protect against environmental hazards and vandalism, so that the system could be readily adapted for submersible use. In addition to its primary intended use - tsunami runup measurement - the system could also be used for the measurement of storm surge runups in hurricane-prone areas, flood water levels, etc. The systems modular design will facilitate easy transport, assembly and installation.
