Research abstract

Liquid phase processing is a key step in the production of glasses, photonic materials, semiconductors, metals and alloys. An improved understanding of liquid structure and behavior would help improve the energy efficiency, yield, and quality of materials formed by liquid phase processing. This project will develop an advanced neutron scattering instrument for the study of liquids and non-equilibrium materials under extreme conditions of temperature. Phase I will: (1) design and construct instrumentation for liquid structure measurements, (2) evaluate data analysis and software requirements and develop prototype data analysis software, (3) perform liquid structure measurements on selected materials, and (4) analyze design requirements for the integration of an enhanced facility for liquid structure measurements during Phase II.
