Research abstract

Simulation of sensor s is an important issue in weapons system development. Recent resurgence in the use of complex engagement models to simulate combat situations has exposed a weakness in these codes. Engagement models are in a hierarchy, from the lowest level, having the greatest detail in the model to the highest level having many of the details reduced to look-up tables or simple values. These models can be used by the analyst to evaluate the effectiveness of electronic countermeasures (ECM) against a particular radar threat laydown. Countermeasures effectiveness is reduced to a quatifiable "measure" that can be used within the model to determine the outcome of the engagement of an ECM technique against one or more threats. SR proposes to carry out this program by leveraging an extensive technology phase in computational electromagnetics codes available from its partner MDA for Phase I tasks. S*R and MDA will bring to the problem unique experimental and simulation facilities. This will enable the Navy to solve a problem of critical national importance at minimal cost under the SBIR program. Since the approach leverages on existing, well established codes and experimental facilities, there is no risk in achieving the goals of this program.
