Research abstract

We will develop software tools and technology for applying spatial constraint-based techniques to mechanical engineering design. The work includes demonstrating a pilot implementation of a variational spatial geometric constraint solver that combines numerical, symbolic and geometric computation and meets the following specifications: 1. Solutions are independent of the sequence of constraints. 2. The solver will address Mechanical Engineering Design and Analysis needs. 3. The solver will be efficient. 4. Solvability is independent of having initial coordinates. 5. The solver can explore alternative solutions. 6. The solver can be integrated with major commercial CAD systems. The Phase I work will accomplish the following: I. Clear evidence that the technology is viable. 11. Specification and selective implementation of established and emerging research algorithms that are robust, efficient, and flexible, and axe targeted to assembly. III. Specification of Phase II implementation targetable to multiple applications in me- chanical engineering design and integration with major commercial CAD systems. Our effort will leverage prior work supported by ONR that included foundational mathemat- ical research, algorithm evaluation, applications research, and software demonstrators; see, for example, . The Phase I implementation work will restrict to assembly design that has high commercial interest.
