Research abstract

RedZone Robotics, Inc. proposes to develop an innovative robotic laser induced surface improvements system (LISI) to meet test facilities requirements of USAF AEDC. The project goal is to demonstrate an easily deployed, rapidly recovered robotic laser and alloy delivery system to improve corroded AEDC duct surfaces at a rate of at least 20 square feet per hour. The system will consist of three major components:-A remotely operated robot capable of traversing Engine Test Facility (ETF) ductwork while delivering the laser and alloy;-A laser delivery unit that will direct sufficient energy to locally bond the allow and duct steel; and- An alloy delivery unit that will distribute allow material so that a suitable improved surface can be formed.During Phase I RedZone and its partner the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) will integrate and test existing nonoptimized robot and LISI components against in situ surface protection requirements. Based upon the results of this demonstration, the partners and AEDC will develop functional requirements for an optimized Phase II system. During Phase II RedZone and UTSI will design, build, integrate, and demonstrate a commercial prototype robotic remote surface alloying system.
