Research abstract

The objective of the proposed program is to design an advanced permanent magnet motor with gearing and the associated electronics for use as a ship propulsion gas turbine starter. The system will be capable of 500 ft-lbs from 0-2800 RPM and 270 Hp from 2800-4600 RPM by utilizing a method of control developed and success- fully tested at Unique Mobility referred to as phase timing advancement. The drive system will include a single stage planetary gearbox to provide the desired output. The system will be designed with the ruggedness required in the application; Unique motors have been operated successfully in comparably harsh environments such as in the wheel (unsprung) of many electric vehicles. The proposed program will include a report detailing the system design, the effects of different potential power sources on the design, a system reliability analysis, package drawings, a bill of materials, costing information, etc.
