Research abstract
Before communication can take place between a transmitter and its intended receiver in a frequency hopping communication system, the hopping pattern of the receiver must be in synchronism with the hoppping pattern of the transmitter. The development oftechniques for the rapid achievment of this synchronization is one of the most important and challenging tasks in the design of frequency hopping systems.Current solutions to this problem involve sending synchronization or timing information to thereceiver by means of an auxilary channel or by sending the information necessary to synchronize in some non frequency-hopping format. These attempts to address the synchronization problem tend to degrade system performance. The objective of the proposedPhase II program is the design, development and fabrication of a self- synchronizing spread spectrum communication systems. These systems will exploit newly developed analytical techniques that can enable a monitor to synchronize to a frequency hoppingradio by making relatively brief observtions of its frequency- hopping pattern. More specifically, these algorithms enable a frequency-hopping receiver to synchronize to a hopping transmitter by observing the relative times-of-arrival of a singlefrequency.
