Research abstract

SITUATION: Pesticides are among the most widely used toxic chemicals in the world, and also among the most dangerous to human health. There is convincing evidence that pesticides play a role in human cancers. Contamination of natural waters with pesticides from agriculture is a problem of primary concern. Accurate detection and measurement of pesticides in aqueous solution has historically required the use of costly methods involving large equipment and the use of chemicals. There are growing demands for field-deployable devices for reliable on-site monitoring of trace pesticides in water at low ppb levels of these compounds. PURPOSE: A field-deployable method for the accurate determination of pesticides in surface and groundwater would have substantial value by quantifiably detecting dissolved pesticide compounds. Detection of these species is critical as they represent health threats to diverse populations, such as farm workers and soldiers operating in contaminated areas. Success in this SBIR effort would increase the safety of drinking water-especially in agricultural areas - and could be an important benefit for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for detection and monitoring applications of the nation's water supplies in the event of a terrorist threat. The rapid and reliable detection of these species would enable measured and appropriate responses and countermeasures to be initiated in a timely fashion. The sensor would be particularly useful for rapid on-site screening, site characterization, and preservation and protection of groundwater resources.
