Research abstract
This program addresses the development of non-contact technology to position and support the shaft of an integrated power unit (IPU). The technology uses foil bearings integrated with an advanced integral starter-generator (ISG) that produces radial forcewhile operating as either a motor or a generator. A novel electromagnetic structure, power electronics, and control algorithm offers a 30% reduction in weight compared to state-of-the switched reluctance machines. Applications here
