Research abstract

60730 The successful development of a superconducting RF photoinjector operating in the continuous mode will extend the range of Free Electron Lasers, not only for use in nuclear physics research, but also in including medicine, industrial processing, and defense. In Phase I, such an injector was designed for supplying 100mAmps of 10 MeV electrons suitable for acceleration in an Free Electron Laser driver linac. Beam performance was modeled to ensure that a robust design was achieved. A detailed design of the major innovative components that drive overall performance and cost was developed. In Phase II, a prototype of the Phase I design will be fabricated and assembled to demonstrate the critical technologies. The construction of the superconducting photonjector, designed in Phase I, will include the development and construction of three new superconducting rf structures, a novel cryostat design, and a cathode chamber. When completed, the injector will deliver an electron beam for characterization and measurement. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: This effort should enable a wide variety of existing and future applications of Free Electron Lasers in research, biology, medicine including both surgery and cancer therapy, industrial processing, micromachining, and defense.
