Research abstract

"Next Century Corporation of Laurel, Maryland and Southwest Research Institute of San Antonio, Texas have teamed to develop a comprehensive, threat warning solution for SOF tactical users. This innovative solution integrates body-worn and other portablethreat detection receivers with location and classification technology as well as advanced battlefield situation displays presented on a PDA. This powerful combination provides the warfighter with an integrated, at-a-glance, up-to-the-moment view of thebattlespace that indicates his/her location, the nature and location of detected threats, and the location of other friendly forces. In addition, real-time data feeds to the PDA can incorporate GIS data, remotely sensed imagery, and other intelligenceinformation. The proposed system approach includes a portable server that is used pre-mission to configure the PDAs with mission-specific information. During the mission, the server provides real-time information from all available sources, includinginformation from other team members. After the mission, the server provides playback capabilities for "hotwash" and training purposes. The key innovations revolve around unique ways of aggregating and compositing information from many sources into asingle, intuitive display with easy-to-use, drill-down, and navigation capabilities. The concept of using commercially available PDAs for the Threat Warning System will dramatically reduce the cos
