Research abstract

Flightline Ground Support Equipment (GSE) must meet ever increasing technical requirements while reducing emissions. Pressure is on to consolidate many sizes into fewer standard models and to convert to electric or hybrid-electric operation. As part ofthis movement, the need has arisen for a DC power distribution module to convert vehicle battery pack power to many types of flightline AC power. The proposed Phase I effort will investigate the feasibility of developing such a DC power distributionmodule. To adhere to the Common Core Power Production (C2P2) initiative, the new distribution module must have equal or better power output, size, weight, maintenance, training, ease of support, safety, life cycle cost, and overall ease of operation. Intelligentcontrol coupled with efficient power electronics promises higher system efficiency, fast transient response, and potentially lower life cycle cost. Seamless integration is also a critical feature. AeroVironment will overcome the many technical challengesby using knowledge gained from a current 72kW fuel cell genset SBIR and with experience gained through our distributed generation joint venture with Delco Remy International (75kW and 150kW gensets).By demonstrating feasibility, we will help enable the Air Force's transition to clean and efficient flightline equipment. Anticipated benefits include flexibility, more efficient power electronics, faster transient response, greater system efficiency, and ease of use and serviceability. Commercial applications include not only Air Force flight line duty, but alsocommercial airline ground support equipment.
