Research abstract
It is evident that having a standard multispectral environment capable of supporting a wide variety of users is crucial to promoting widespread use of any standard M&S architecture and reusability among the players and player components developed for such an architecture. A standard environment will provide for greater player portability and reusability since players would not be linked to a unique and narrowly defined environment. Implementation of a standard multispectral environment will provide tremendous cost savings to any agency which engages in M&S activity involving some type of environmental phenomenology. The development of a standard multispectral environment must: 1) be performed from a "big picture" or integrated point of view; 2) be user configurable; 3) be scalable from lesser to more detailed granularity; 4) be distributable; and 5) contain a common geographic referencing system. This common geographic referencing system should be capable of supporting the simulation configuration, execution and post-processing modes. Several existing programs are centered around DoD standardization of various M&S aspects, in particular digital terrain and surface feature databases. This SBIR effort will not attempt to redevelop environmental effects models or databases but rather identify related efforts and draw upon them as resources for this study.
