Research abstract

The proposed work is to develop a whole-field measurement technique that iscapable of simultaneously sizing multiple transparent droplets on a plane fromscattered light features that are independent of laser beam intensity andobscuration. Light scattered by reflection and refraction from droplets immersedin a laser sheet is recorded holographically to yield the smallest possibleprobe volume and correspondingly largest number density. Phase I analyses andexperiments demonstrated that the 3-D capability of holography makes globalspray measurements in dense sprays possible with the proposed technique. Datafrom Phase I confirms the high accuracy of the interferometric technique andsuggests the path to develop a prototype system. We propose to develop a systemcapable of searching and finding scattered light features as a function ofposition (3-D), filtering the signals, and performing automatic image analysisthat correlate frequency information to particle size. The proposed system willbe based on digital holography, which is capable of recording the scatteredlight wavefront from a population of droplets illuminated by a pulsed lasersheet and of subsequently producing the droplet size distribution as a functionof position anywhere and everywhere on the sheet.
