Research abstract

Not Available This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will address the problems of seal failure. A detailed study of sealing systems on mission critical Navy equipment will document common and machine specific seals. They will be analyzed for the type and the cost of failure. An application will be selected for the development of a smart seal. A smart seal is one that can predicts it's own failure. After determining the maximum allowable wear of a seal it can be monitored for useful seal life. This can be done by measuring movement or detecting wear of the sealing surface.
