Research abstract

This Small Business Innovation Research Phase II project willdevelop a Positron Trap Beam Source (PTBS) with performanceparameters that greatly exceed the current state-of-the-art. Thiswill be accomplished using novel techniques to accumulate, cool, and manipulate positrons in Penning traps. This project is basedon the results of a highly successful Phase I program. The PTBSwill supply ultracold, bright positron beams for a variety ofscientific and industrial applications, and will employ advancedtrap-based brightness enhancement techniques for the productionof microbeams. The technical objectives of the Phase II projectare to: (1) design a laboratory prototype of the PTBS systemincorporating a scanning positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS)system; (2) construct the PTBS laboratory prototype; (3)demonstrate the PTBS system as a scanning beam probe; and (4)adapt the PTBS as a scanning PAS diagnostic for analysis ofsemiconductor materials and devices. The Phase II options willdevelop additional applications that will be important inresearch and industry. The Phase II results will form a firmfoundation for rapid commercialization in Phase III.
