Research abstract

REALISTIC GROUND VIBRATION TESTING OF FLEXIBLE SPACECRAFT REQUIRES A MEANS FOR SUPPORTING THE TEST ARTICLE IN 1-G WITHOUT IMPOSING CONSTRAINT FORCES DUE TO STIFFNESS, MASS, DAMPING, OR FRICTION. SPACECRAFT HAVING LARGE, FLEXIBLE APPENDAGES WITH HIGH AREA/MASS RATIOS ARE PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT BECAUSE AIR EFFECTS REQUIRE THAT THEY BE TESTED IN A VACUUM. THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT WILL ATTEMPT TO ENHANCE THE PNEUMATIC-MAGNETIC SUSPENSION SYSTEM DEVELOPED EARLIER BY CSA ENGINEERING TO OPERATE IN A VACUUM AND TO ACCOMMODATE VERTICAL MOTIONS OF UP TO SIX INCHES. OTHER DESIGN GOALS WILL INCLUDE VERTICAL SUSPENSION FREQUENCY OF 0.1 HZ OR LOWER AND FRICTION LESS THAN 0.005% OF PAYLOAD WEIGHT. IN PHASE I, A SINGLE SUSPENSION DEVICE WILL BE DESIGNED, BUILT, AND TESTED.
