Research abstract
65184 Coal gasification technology could provide synthesis gas as an alternative to natural gas, but the economics are not attractive. Although current coal gasification processes are non-catalytic, the development of catalytic coal gasification processes could significantly improve gasification economics. Such processes would require improved catalysts with longer lifetime, higher activity, and poisoning resistance. This project will develop novel catalysts for coal gasification that show high gasification activity at low reaction temperatures, resist deactivation by SO2 and other minerals, and have long lifetimes. In Phase I, the feasibility of the concept will be demonstrated by synthesizing novel nano-structured mixed catalysts and demonstrating their performance in short-term steam gasification tests in a bench-scale continuous-flow reactor. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: Improved catalysts for coal gasification could significantly improve the economics for producing synthesis gas from coal and other carbonaceous feedstocks. Significant commercial development of such processes would provide syngas for use in the conversion to clean hydrocarbon fuels, which would reduce demand for petroleum-derived fuels. A reduction in reliance on imported oil would result.
