Research abstract
Not Available Emerging challenges to the 21st century warfighter and law enforcement officer will require the development of effective non-lethal weapons. MOUT, peace-keeping missions, facility/embassy protection, control of civil unrest, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism missions all require effective non-lethal technologies that provides profound disruptive and diversionary effects. SARA proposes the development of an innovative Multi-Sensory Grenade (MSG) that achieves profound disruption through the combined overwhelm of three human sensory systems. The MSG achieves 1) strong auditory pain and verbal communications defeat through intense sound emission, 2) production of disorienting visual flicker vertigo through intense rep. pulsed light, and finally 3) nausea and disgust through release of an overwhelming noxious scent compound. All three sensory bombardment effects occur with intensities and exposures well below any permanent eye or auditory damage threshold. The production of the intense sound, light output and malodorous components are all driven from a common long storage life high pressure or warm gas source with no electrical power required. The MSG will give the warfighter and law enforcement officer a powerful new tool in countering 21st century threat scenarios.
