Research abstract

Increasing computer power, decreasing budgets, and safety are all reasons for using simulators for air combat training. Air combat computer models are also useful for predicting the effectiveness of future aircraft systems and testing new tactics. Although these increasingly sophisticated models provide adequate realism for the enviornment and flight simulation, it is far more difficult to model a pilot's judgment. This proposal concerns research and development of computer based Pilot Decision Logic (PDL) suitable for use in man-maching air-to-air simulation programs such as MIL-AASPEM II. OR Concepts Applied (ORCA) will compare and contrast PDLs built with genetic algorithms and Case-based reasoning logic. Both types of PDL will be demonstrated in a test environment within OPUS, an existing computer program developed by ORCA on previous SBIR efforts.
