Research abstract

The effective use of active sonar systems in littoralenvironments relies on the accurate knowledge of the acousticenvironment. Current Navy standard databases for ocean bottomproperties provide a valuable tool for planning but do notcurrently provide the spatial resolution needed. Inversion ofownship and/or bistatic/multistatic transmissions for oceanbottom properties can provide much more accurate informationabout the acoustic environment. This information can then be usedin optimizing the use of the active sonar system, in essence, tuning the sonar for the environment. The Phase I work showedthat in two acoustic environments the ASA algorithm has shown anability to provide estimates of LFBL parameters that are as goodor better than those from the FA algorithm with a significantreduction in run times. Run times for the ASA algorithm comparedto the FA algorithm for the same cases were between 12 and 16times faster. While significant, this result needs to bevalidated across as broad a variety of acoustic environments aspossible in to test its tactical utility and robustness. Thecommercialization of this technology will initially focus on theNaval Air ASW community that can currently collect multistaticacoustic data in normal operations.
