Research abstract
We propose to develop a domain specific library and API for parallel computing in heterogenous and HPC environments. The domain we propose is partial differential equations. Partial differential equations is the substrate used for simulation in the following disciplines: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM), Computational Chemistry and Material Science (CCM), Computational Electromagnetics (CEN), Climate/Weather/Ocean Modeling (CWO), Environmental Quality Modeling and Simulation (EQM). It is Estimated that over 90% of DoD HPC cycles are spent in these disciplines. The proposed tool Scale-PDESolve is based on an existing scalar library that BEAM is soon to be beta siting at Xerox, Kodak, and the Cornell Theory Center. PDESolve enable programming at a level close to the differential equations using an object oriented C++ environment establishing an API for PDE simulation. On a CFD example a PDESolve program was two orders of magnitude smaller than a comparable FORTRAN program. To create Scale-PDESolve we will integrate into PDESolve existing parallel HPC libraries such as BLAS (or other libraries that deal with distributed matrix computations). The resultant product will have a market both as a stand-alone product and as a value added product to be used by developers and maintainers of large engineering codes.
