Research abstract

In recent decades, the world has become increasingly interconnected, technology has advanced at an accelerating pace, and deadlier weapons have increased the cost of outright warfare. As a result, nations increasingly use “grey zone” tactics – nuanced and complex operations such as misinformation, economic pressure, and cyber-attacks – to achieve their goals without instigating kinetic warfare. LLMs are poorly suited to grey zone analysis; they struggle with ambiguous or complex requests and are prone to hallucinations. Boston Fusion Corp (BFC), Arizona State University (ASU) and Plessas Experts Network (PEN) propose Strategic Intelligence for Grey zone Modeling and Analysis (SIGMA): an intuitive tool that retrieves and organizes open-source data for a region or population of interest, and applies computational social science tools to provide relevant features of human geography. SIGMA provides intelligence analysts with a GUI to explore socio-cultural analytics, connections between groups and individuals, as well as the provenance of the input data. Users can also export data in formats compatible with standard analysis tools, such as ESRI and Google Earth.
