Research abstract

Emerging tactical information systems will provide commanders and staffs with critical battlefield information, but will also provide large volumes of routine information as well. We propose to design and build a commander's intelligent battlefield information display (CIBID) which will adaptively filter this information and intelligently sort the routine from the critical tactical information items, and present the critical information to the commander in a timely and effective manner. CIBID will process large volumes of information, parse out critical information, present this information to the commander in real time and in the format desired by the commander, and intelligently change the parsing criteria based on changes in the tactical situation and on the commander's preferences. In Phase I of the proposed program, we will analyze the commander's cognitive information requirements, design the CIBID knowledge representation, specify a preliminary system architecture and HCI, demonstrate the CIBID concept, and construct a detailed plan for developing and testing an operational CIBID prototype in Phase II. The final result will be an intelligent information management tool which is reactive to the commander's needs, allowing the commander to concentrate on conducting the battle, rather than on managing the information.
