Research abstract

STRATONICS proposes a wavelength tunable laser radar which can be rapidly tuned over the mid-infrared spectral region from l.4 to um. We offer a unique approach which uses optical parametric oscillator (OPO) crystals to provide a small, efficient and reliable device which can be rapidly tuned over a broad spectral range. Piezoelectgric motion control of the OPO crystals will provide wavelength tuning with no change in laser alignment or pointing direction (boresight). The laser will be diode-pumped for efficiency and capable of operating at pulse repetition rates of l0 KHz, average powers of 1-2 Watts and peak pulse powers of l0 KW, with continuous wavelength tunability from l.4 to 4 um. This approach will provide a laser radar with wavelength agility to provide eyesafe opeation, tuning to defeat wavelength dependent countermeasures, and the abioity to match the spectral output to ambient atmospheric conditions or known target characteristics. This technology also has a wide variety of additional applicaitons in both the public and private sectors, including remote sensing, environmental monitoring, industrial process monitoring and medical laser applications.
